US bank account for a non-resident LLC: what banks ask
A US bank or account provider decides on its own whether to open an account for an LLC owned from abroad. We list what they usually ask for, the federal rules behind those questions and how to prepare the documents.

Can a non-resident open a US bank account for an LLC?
Often yes, but the decision belongs to the bank or account provider, not to the company formation service. Each institution runs its own review, sets its own rules for owners who live abroad and may decline without giving a reason. What you can control is how complete and consistent your documents are when you apply.
This post explains what US banks and business account providers usually ask for and why. It is general information, not legal or financial advice, and LaunchUS does not open bank accounts. It draws on FinCEN's Customer Due Diligence rule page and the IRS EIN page, both accessed 31 October 2026.
Why do US banks ask so many questions?
US banks follow federal anti-money-laundering rules. FinCEN describes collecting identifying information before an account is opened, including a taxpayer identification number, as a long-standing part of a bank's programme. For a company the identification number is its EIN. Banks also have to know who owns and controls the company before the account opens.
FinCEN's Customer Due Diligence rule asks covered institutions to identify and verify any individual who owns 25 percent or more of a legal entity customer, plus at least one individual who controls it. For a single-member LLC that is usually you twice: as the owner and as the person in control. Expect questions about both roles.
What documents does a bank usually ask an LLC for?
Most applications follow the same pattern: proof that the company exists, its federal tax number, who owns it, where it operates and what it does. The exact list differs between institutions, so treat the table below as a preparation checklist, not as any bank's official requirement. Always read the provider's own application page first.
| What the bank asks about | Document that usually answers it |
|---|---|
| The company exists | Articles of Organization (Wyoming) or Certificate of Formation (Delaware) with the state's filing stamp |
| Federal tax number | The IRS letter that confirms the EIN |
| Ownership and control | Operating agreement naming the member and manager |
| The owner's identity | Valid passport, sometimes a second ID or a video check |
| Addresses | The company's US address and proof of the owner's home address |
| The business itself | Website, product description, expected volume and the countries of your customers |
The IRS says an EIN can be used for most business needs right away, opening a bank account among them. Our EIN service explains how the number is applied for when the owner has no SSN.
Why can the company address cause a problem?
Banks want to know where the business is actually run and where it receives mail. A registered agent address exists for official notices, and many providers do not accept it as the company's business address. Mail-only boxes are often refused too. An address that does not match the rest of the file is a common reason for follow-up questions.
The difference is explained in our post on the registered agent address vs a business address. The LaunchUS Registered Agent service provides the registered agent address and scans official mail into your vault. If you plan to apply for an account, our pricing page also lists the LaunchUS Business Address and the LaunchUS Virtual Office add-ons; the Virtual Office includes a lease agreement and is the option we recommend for bank applications.
How do you prepare an application step by step?
Prepare the file before you open the first application form, because most providers ask for everything in one session and compare the details across documents. Names, addresses and the company's activity should read the same way everywhere. The steps below follow the order in which most online business account applications ask for information.
- Collect the company documents. Download the formation document, the EIN letter and the operating agreement from your document vault.
- Check every spelling. The company name, your name and your address should match across the passport, the formation document and the EIN letter.
- Describe the business plainly. Write two or three sentences about what you sell, to whom and in which countries.
- Get the website ready. A live site with contact details and terms supports the description.
- Apply and answer follow-ups quickly. Banks often ask extra questions; a fast, consistent reply helps the review.
Which payment tools depend on the bank account?
Payment providers usually pay out to a bank account in the company's name, so the account often comes before them. Stripe, for example, verifies the legal entity, the EIN and the business address, and pays out to an external account, usually a bank account. Our Stripe documents checklist lists what it asks for.
How the account fits a particular business is covered in our guides for Stripe, e-commerce sellers and freelancers. Each guide marks which decisions belong to the platform or the bank.
How does LaunchUS help with a bank application?
LaunchUS forms the LLC, applies for the EIN and keeps every company document in your vault, so you can download a consistent set when a bank asks. We do not apply on your behalf, do not recommend a particular bank and cannot influence a bank's decision. The review and the answer stay with the bank.
If a bank asks for a document we hold, such as the formation document or the EIN letter, you will find it in the vault. If it asks for something outside our service, such as a reference letter or a personal tax document, you obtain it yourself.
Where the bank application falls in the formation process is shown step by step in how to form a US LLC from abroad. For the business address you put on the application, see the US business address service.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to travel to the US to open a business bank account?
It depends on the institution. Some banks ask the owner to visit a branch, while some account providers run the whole review online. Check the provider's current rules before you apply.
Can I open a US business account without an SSN or ITIN?
Some providers accept a foreign owner with a passport and the company's EIN, and others ask for an SSN or ITIN. The provider decides; read its application requirements first.
Does LaunchUS open a bank account for my LLC?
No. LaunchUS forms the company, applies for the EIN and keeps the documents. The bank or account provider reviews the application and makes the decision.
Why was my application declined without a reason?
A bank may decline without explaining why. Check that your documents, addresses and business description are consistent, then consider another provider.
