Registered agent address vs business address

A registered agent address is where the state and courts reach your LLC; a business address is where the company works and gets its mail. We explain what state rules say about each and why banks look at the second one.

What is the difference between a registered agent address and a business address?

A registered agent address is the street address in the state of formation where legal papers, such as service of process, can be delivered to your LLC during business hours. A business address is where the company actually operates and receives its everyday mail. The state requires the first; customers, banks and platforms usually ask for the second.

This post summarises the Wyoming Secretary of State's registered agent FAQ and the Delaware Division of Corporations registered agent page (both accessed 31 October 2026). It is general information, not legal advice. For what the service covers, see our Registered Agent service page.

What do the states require from a registered agent address?

The Wyoming FAQ says the registered office must be at a street address in Wyoming and that post office boxes, drop boxes, virtual addresses and mail forwarding locations do not qualify. Delaware says a registered agent must maintain a street address and office in Delaware and be open during business hours to accept service of process.

Both states also expect the agent to consent to the appointment, and Wyoming lists records the agent keeps at the registered office, such as a contact person for the company. In Wyoming, business hours for this purpose are eight in the morning to five in the afternoon, Mountain Time, on working days. The Wyoming LLC guide and the Delaware LLC guide show where the agent appears in each formation.

What is a business address used for?

A business address is the place the company names as its own: on its website, invoices, contracts and applications. It is where customers write, where everyday letters arrive and what a bank or payment provider compares with the rest of the file. It is chosen by the company, not set by state statute in the same way.

Payment providers say this directly. Stripe's US requirements page asks for a physical address where most business activity happens and states that PO boxes are not accepted. Banks follow customer identification and due diligence rules; FinCEN's customer due diligence rule is one of them. Each institution decides which address documents it accepts.

How do the two addresses compare?

The table below sets the two side by side. The key point is purpose: a registered agent address lets the state and courts reach the company reliably, while a business address lets the people it works with find and check it. One address serves both only where the rules allow.

Can I use the registered agent address as my business address?

The Wyoming FAQ says the registered office may be the same as the place of business, when the company really operates there. For a founder abroad, the registered agent address is usually a service address for legal papers, not an office the company uses. Many banks and platforms treat it that way and may ask for another address.

Whether a specific provider accepts it is that provider's decision, and practice changes. Before you apply anywhere, check these points:

  1. Read the provider's address rule. Look for words such as "physical address", "principal place of business" or "no PO boxes".
  2. Check the service terms. A registered agent service usually covers legal and state mail, not every letter the company receives.
  3. Match your documents. The address on the application should match the address on the documents you upload.
  4. Keep the state record current. If the registered agent changes, the state is told by a filing.
  5. Update the IRS when needed. A change of mailing address or responsible party for the EIN is reported to the IRS separately.

Which LaunchUS address service fits which need?

LaunchUS offers three separate items, and our pricing page lists each one. LaunchUS Registered Agent provides the registered agent address in the state of formation and scans official mail into your vault. LaunchUS Business Address adds a US street address with your own suite number for everyday letters. LaunchUS Virtual Office adds a lease agreement.

The Virtual Office option is the one we recommend if you plan to apply for a bank account, because it comes with a document that describes the address. Even so, the bank decides which address it accepts. Our post on a US bank account for a non-resident LLC covers what banks ask for, and the Stripe documents checklist does the same for Stripe. Sellers can also read the guide for e-commerce sellers.

Frequently asked questions

Is a registered agent address the same as a mailing address?

Not necessarily. The registered agent address is where legal papers and state notices are delivered. A mailing address is where the company receives other mail. A registered agent service usually handles the first kind and may not forward everything else.

Can a registered office be a PO box?

No. The Wyoming FAQ says the registered office must be a street address in Wyoming and that post office boxes, drop boxes, virtual addresses and mail forwarding locations do not qualify. Delaware also requires a street address and office in the state.

Will a bank accept a registered agent address?

Each bank decides which address documents it accepts, and many ask for a physical business address rather than a registered agent address. Check the bank's own requirements before you apply; LaunchUS does not open bank accounts.

Does the registered agent address have to stay the same every year?

No. The company can change its registered agent or address by a filing with the state. Keeping the registered agent active matters for the yearly filings listed in our yearly obligations checklist.
